LA–In a continuation of their community outreach program, students of Excelsior Academy traveled to a local public school to pick up trash today at around 1:30 pm.
“I’m just happy to be helping out,” said Amber Barrington. “We need to understand that this is where some people live, and that poverty is in our neighborhoods, too.”
Head of School Dr. Ryland also stated support the project.
“This is really great exposure for our students, to see how the other side lives,” she said.
Students from the public school had a similar reaction.
“I have no fucking clue what’s going on,” said Ryan P., a junior. “I was in math and I see these kids from that private school a mile away just picking up shit on the basketball court.”
“I just don’t understand it, we literally live in the same area code as them,” said another student. “I live two doors down from a kid that goes to Excelsior. I honestly think this is the first time any of these kids have seen a public school.”
“They’re clearly leaving more trash than they’re picking up,” added a third.
At the end of the day, students of Excelsior Academy felt really, really good about themselves, and isn’t that what community service is about?
